Sustainability at Firkin Brewery
At Firkin Brewery, we believe great beer should be brewed with respect — for our community, our ingredients, and our planet. When we set up our new home in 2023, sustainability wasn’t an afterthought — it was built into our foundations.
Brewing is resource‑intensive, but with the right choices, it can also be a force for good. From the grain in our mash tun to the glass in your hand, we’re working to reduce our environmental footprint and brew a better future.
Our Commitments
🌱 Sourcing Locally & Responsibly
- We prioritise locally grown barley and hops wherever possible, reducing food miles and supporting British farmers.
- We work with suppliers who share our values on environmental stewardship and ethical production.
💧 Water Conservation
- Brewing takes a lot of water — so we’ve invested in water‑saving equipment and processes to use every drop wisely.
- Wherever possible, we re‑use cleaning water for non‑brewing purposes, such as wash‑downs and irrigation.
♻️ Waste Reduction & Circular Practices
- Spent grain from our brewing process is donated to local farms as high‑quality animal feed, keeping it out of landfill.
- We recycle all our glass, cardboard, and metal, and are exploring composting options for organic waste.
⚡ Renewable Energy & Efficiency
- Our brewhouse is designed for energy efficiency, with heat recovery systems that capture and reuse warmth from the brewing process.
- We’re actively exploring renewable energy sources to power more of our operations.
📦 Sustainable Packaging
- We use recyclable cans and bottles, and are trialling biodegradable or recyclable alternatives to plastic packaging.
- Our labels are printed with eco‑friendly inks on sustainably sourced paper.
Looking Ahead
Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We’re committed to reviewing our practices regularly, setting measurable goals, and sharing our progress openly. As we grow, so will our efforts to protect the environment — because we believe the best beer is one you can feel good about drinking.
